J. K. Haynes Elementary Charter School Reviews

I am a parent with two children enrolled in the school. This school has made a remarkable difference in the quality of education my children are now receiving as opposed to what they were receiving previously in an EBR parish school. The teachers do a wonderful job of making the children feel confident in their talents and abilities. I strongly disagree with the comment posted (September 2006). I happen to be familiar with the teacher being referred to in the comment. When my child was enrolled in this teacher's class, she went above and beyond to help my child achieve. When my son arrived in her class, he was reading on a low 1st grade level, he left reading above a 3rd grade level. She tutored my child after school and on Saturdays. I believe the parent that posted those 'character attacking' comments was disgruntled or downright mean-spirited and ignorant!

During my child's attendance at JK Haynes I was impressed with the schools academic achievement. Most all teachers are strong, highly qualified individuals with the exception of one teacher who is very rude, confrontational, and childlike and is known for stripping a child's confidence and enthusiasm and seems to get support from the now acting principal. During Mr. Haynes leadership, the school was headed in the right direction. My child was extremely happy and confident. I encouraged others to enroll their kids. There has not been an individual put in place that seems to have leadership skills needed to successfully run this school since the loss of Mr. Haynes. Parents have often asked for a Parent and Teacher group to be formed-not! Hats OFF to the Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers, You are the glue that holds that school together.

I would like to just let it be known that there are indeed some that help make up the staff of J.K Haynes Charter School very good people. On the other hand, some are not. Extracurricular activities are not offerd, and favortism is an issue as well. There is not unity at this school.

J. K. Haynes Elementary Charter School is simply an outstanding school that has achieved outstanding results. This is a school where children are excited about learning and teachers are excited about teaching. This is a school where more than 80% of the students are at risk inner city youth and they consistently score at the top of standardized tests. This school has consistently been rated as one of the top three elementary schools in East Baton Rouge Parish.

This school was a good school when it first opened up. The first director really cared for the students and made an effort to make this a good environment for students, staff and parents. The new director/founder is rude and lacks leadership abilities. We tried to reach him on several visits to the school but he's hardly there. I feel that the teachers love what they do and they do a good job of teaching but the turn over rate is high because of the administration problems.
